Mind your Mind

In todays world there is so much attention to social media and needed to fulfill a persona. It is daunting and stressful. Instead of enjoying moments or the process we are taking photos of things to post for the world to see.

Even as artists on Instagram we are compelled to constantly upkeep our art page for fear of losing followers. Which happens anyway lets face it. If you aren’t posting a couple of times a day your going to drop followers, so you opt to buy automatic posts. A little less stressful but still needs upkeep.

I think the whole point of being on social media is lost with the lack of engagement and real conversations. We don’t build actual relationships with our customers and lasting bonds to create a true fan and business attraction. I mean take twitter for example, how many people actually check the inbox of those new followers who have preprogrammed them to message you once you follow? Its spam and no one likes it. So if there was any it is lost in the mix of all the hiccups of technology.  We rely on likes or hearts, retweets to get there fans to like it to validate what we are doing. Does this get you a sale? Does anyone see what you are trying to accomplish? it does give you exposure this is true but Lets put it into perspective.

Instagram now has over 700 million users, and 250 million users use Instagram Stories every day. In total, Instagram’s added more than 200 million users to its platform in under a year, with 100 million of the newcomers signing on between December and the end of April.  WOW right?

SO does what we do have much impact? If hashtags are used correctly it can be somewhat effective but again its very short lived. You have seconds for someone to see what you post until they scroll to the next image. Just like Twitter, lets put that into perspective.

According to the last statistics, twitter has 554,750,000 users in the world and this number is being continued in each minute. The number of twitter users signing up every day is 135,000; every month about 190 million people are visiting twitter.

How do we go backwards in this ever changing tech world? For those of you who are older who have seen all the changes and followed suit reluctantly you know what I mean. Everyone’s head is pointed down on there phone, headphones in no communication to the people standing right in front of you.

I am included in the mix. When do we unplug? I am so connected to my customers and boss and my online shop that I have become morphed into a walking electronic always no matter what time of day or night engaging with clients, answering questions. When do I sleep, when do I shut down and recharge.

When you realize that no matter what those clients will be there when you get up and that this is vital to disconnect from it for your mental health and well being you will start to set time to prioritize this to keep you fresh and mentally healthy hopefully before you have a meltdown from the stress of it all.

Also when you don’t always feel the need to be ON all the time you will start to get more and more perspective as to what is important. Those moments don’t always need to be photographed.

Those validations are not so important anymore. If you are genuine and you have a craft that takes time and you love what you do then people will see this and you will gain real followers who love your creativity.

Lets not forget the Ladies and Gentlemen who post half naked pics on twitter and Instagram and what ever other social media these people have to show themselves for self gratification;  I am going to address this as well.

You don’t always have to be on posting photos of your body because whom ever loves you will not make you feel like you have to get that kind of positive or negative attention on social media. And somethings should be secret and sacred to just your partner. WE don’t need to see every curve and every muscle that’s meant for your partner.  Leave something to the imagination. Its classier and you attract real meaningful relationships not social fake media ones that lack respect and dignity from these random people whom ultimately don’t matter.  And how are you to trust someone who does this constantly that says they love you for others to view you in your birthday suit? ask yourself that.

Getting down to how to uplug, here is a few things one can do to reconnect with yourself without tech interference.

  1. read a book  ( not on your phone)
  2. meditate, 20 mins a day does wonders
  3. take a walk and leave the phone at home
  4. Have a party with family and friends ( no phones allowed)
  5. Exercise
  6. listen to music
  7. DO something creative, write, paint etc..

What’s On the Other Side of YOUR fear?

I keep coming across posts about fear and how to challenge it. I feel like if we don’t know how the mind really works it doesn’t have any real impact.

So I am gonna try and break it down for you, because for me when I heard this when I was reading one of many books on the secret to success and self help books I read something so simple yet so profound that it made perfect sense and it was kind of an ‘aha’ moment.

So fear, The definition is : an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger by something or someone.
b (1) : an instance of this emotion (2) : a state marked by this emotion.

Right so we all know what it is. Ok so what if I told you that your brains one goal and function in its life is to keep you safe and happy?  SO anytime something new or not experienced by the brain would react to it negatively causing you to yep you guessed it create FEAR! SO because you have not experienced this new place or town or  new job, relationships too, your brain doesn’t want you to fail or to be unhappy and since it cannot tell what the outcome is it will cause this reaction and in turn you wont do it because you are afraid. And so you stay in this comfort zone and everything remains the same. But because you are an intelligent human that endless nudge to dream bigger goals achieve greater things is always there too. So we have to push through and no matter what we can at least say yes, I did it and I either know it didn’t work or OMG this is the greatest thing I have ever done!!!

So these posts that say on the other side of fear is the greatest life you can dream makes perfect sense now doesn’t it?

Love learning new things, so simple yet perfect. So the next time you are getting a feeling of no to that new job you been dreaming about, take the chance! you will either not like it the same as you don’t like the one in now OR you LOVE IT and it was the best decision you ever made despite your fear of the unknown.  And this applies to us artists who are afraid to try a new technique or a new media. Just do it!

2018 – This is your year!

So a month into 2018 and already its going by so fast. Now into February How are your goals looking? Have you started to get into the groove of things and setting up challenges to meet those goals?

Every year people get so excited because a new year means a new chance at obtaining that goal we have been putting off. But like most people once we get right into it the goal seems to take a regular back burner and we don’t end up doing what we set out to do on that great midnight strikes 12 promise.  Most common ones are getting fit or losing weight or quitting smoking.

I think if you plan these things out and not go out on a whim you have a better chance of the goal being obtained.

SO for every day you avoid that donut or walk for 30 mins write it down on your calender. Yes there will be that tempting donut you couldn’t resist but don’t give up! The next day you have a chance to start again. Make it count and once you start writing it down everyday it will become easier and easier to do.

I find that if you can visually see you are working towards something the easier it gets. Like for me if I want to do something I write it down and look at it everyday and ask myself if I have done it or am I just procrastinating?

Also make the goal an exciting thing, its not supposed to be a death sentence. Write a list of all the positives you will get out of it once its achieved put it on the fridge or somewhere you are faced with the decision you made daily. Let it be a constant reminder to keep yourself in check.

Not only that but mentally you have to really want it too, because no matter what if you are doing this for someone else it won’t work. It has to be for you only.

And lastly, don’t tell anyone you are going to do until its done. Nothing like having people eyeball every slip up you make (like eating the damn donut) when you don’t actually do what you said. You are already your own biggest critic so give yourself a break and keep your goals personal until it happens then surprise them with it! Because really this is just about you and no one else. Only you have yourself to keep track of, and it isn’t the responsibility of another person to keep you in check.

So if you want to do something, like that painting sitting in the corner getting dusty, ahem… then its best to set some time aside everyday to get that done. little by little it will if you keep at it!

What makes you Great?

I sit and think about what defines me what makes me unique about what makes me set apart from others and I ask myself…

What can I do to stand out, to make a difference?

Something that will make my kids proud of me. Then I really don’t have to think that hard. I am already. There is no one else like me. There is no one else like you. SO why do we feel like we have to be something we aren’t?

It’s one thing to become better at something to be the best self we can be, but to look at others and think why can’t I draw as good as them or paint as well? That’s wrong.  Perhaps these sabotaging thoughts have crept into your mind.

You want to stand out and yet there is thousands and thousands of us who paint and draw and they are all over Instagram Facebook and everywhere really.  Sounds depressing? No, it isn’t. You know why because everyone is different. And that is what makes you special.  We all have unique techniques to do something and guess what no matter how good you are, someone out there just won’t like it. But you know what is even better? Someone out there thinks it’s amazing!!!!

SO you are what makes you great!!! Keep giving of yourself your talents your gifts your best you and someone out there is going to recognize it and pay you, yes you!

The formula to being great is YOU! Giving back and contributing your passion for life and creativity is what the world needs. And if you come across something that you think may just change the way people look at the world then do that too.

Be kind love one another and see people as beings of light, not as any flesh form but souls who are renting bodies for awhile. Give your gift, put it out there for the world to see. People who are on the same plain as you will gravitate to you. You know whats even better? when you have a positive loving outlook towards everyone, you create an environment that gives you a chance receive that much more.

Reflect the position you want to be in.

Exhausted? How to stretch those hours into quality not quantity.

I often find myself taking on too many tasks and too many projects as they always seem to come in clusters. I feel as though I may not know when the next job comes as an illustrator so when a multitude of work comes my way I just can’t say no.

Typically I work late evening night hours as much as my body will physically allow, only to burn out and eventually become ill. So when is really a good time to stop working and be more productive at your job at home or in the office?

Well, I have started to use certain increments of time during the day or evening that it is set in stone that I set aside for my family and activities because really isn’t that who you are working for anyway? These time slots are not allowed to be broken they are a must a block of time to set aside that will not be broken.

If you don’t take those breaks for yourself, I find the creativity stops flowing and you become so exhausted that the quality of your work suffers as a result. Not to mention family members and friends wondering where you went to. So even if it is 20 mins to read that article that has been sitting on the table for weeks or just stopping to enjoy that cup of coffee or listen to your friends and families day can take huge advantages to your overall moral and health.

Work is work and family is family and they cannot be replaced so remember that the next time you decide to work late to get in extra hours to buy that bigger home no one will ever see you in.  Remember what is really important, you, your health and your family.

 

Laws of life

 

Laws of life are simple yet can be a complicated balance act of  Being kind, being grateful and loving to all, even our self.  If we can remember these simple laws of life our outlook on life begins to shift. There in fact is no room for negative feelings because when we are grateful it already forces us to see the good around us.

When we go against things that are deeply embedded into our genetics and of our ancestors we change. We go out into the world and make a difference, not to the point of being well known, although some do. But nevertheless, we make marked differences to our family and friends near by and they in turn start to radiate that energy you are showing.

Our minds focus not so much on our own aches and pains  but to helping others and  being grateful. It becomes like a magnet and second nature and it is drawn back to us.

If we are always looking for more and never grateful for what life has provided for us which is basically what we think we deserve. It will up till now have in fact created the environment in which you are presently in.

I didn’t believe it before but now that I think about it hard and in non judgement without added excuses I yes have indeed put myself into the lifestyle I thought I deserved. But now I see that I do have the power to change it, I do deserve to be happy and to want to see more then what is presented to me.

That may be hard if you are dealing with guilt or a tragic past you may think that this is what you deserve and even if you are not happy remain because it is what you believe you can only get.

But once you start to think outside the box and be grateful for everything and are not accepting that situation you are in (because of outside factors) and realize it can be changed, things will indeed change. Remember however the speed in which you think you deserve the change or are ready to accept it is ultimately in coalition with you.

Even Despite the fact that we stretch ourselves out to help others and even to the point we haven’t had time to care about our self, only back fires we end up neglecting the very source of the core that is needed to bring forth these feelings.

Being taken advantage of or even disregarded because no matter what, you are showing people what they can get away with. If you never learn to say no then when you want to do things for you, no time will be left.

The laws of life requires a balance. In the words of the wise,’ Be the reflection of the world you want to see.’ So if you want to relax and be at peace you need to carve out that peace. The dishes can wait, or that friend that needs help with something will have to understand that a half hour to read your favorite book or listen to your favorite CD is a must.

Meditation and clearing your head of all the clutter to start fresh and focus to be calm to tackle what ever comes that day is also I find a life saver. If you have never tried it, please do. 20 mins a day  keeps the mind crisp and clear and at ease, which is essential for heavy jobs such as an entrepreneur or start up. Moms and who ever you are, we all need it.

There is nothing wrong with taking time out for you briefly to regroup and focus on our loved ones among the daily chores.

But if you are having trouble thinking of reasons to be grateful for life think about this, being able to get up in the morning is more then enough reason to be thankful for life. It is a start and we can go from there,  if we can see, smell, touch, we have clothes or a roof on our head all good reasons to be thankful and grateful for life.

If we can even in the worst day be grateful for something we can shift our life to the one we would like to see. Whether it be business adventures or any other dream or ambition it all starts with these basic laws of life, be grateful, be kind and love.

Practice it at first and after a while your mind will shift and it will be an automatic response when life throws daggers at us.
