Artists, you ready for the Busiest time of year?

Whether you are starting to feel the grind of the holidays starting to rise or not as an artist its always a good idea to be prepared. How can we get ready for the busy season and juggle the Christmas orders along with our own personal work?

Time is key! yes time. Time is an essential balance of what is priority and what is not. If you time how long a painting takes, for example a pet portrait painting you can make an allowance of that amount and etc.  This will help to get the projects done and allow for scheduling of multiple orders.  Take for an example a painting that is larger will take more time than a smaller one, or multiple pets in one painting will take much longer as well so allow extra time for those projects.

Another idea is to always inform your customer of how long of a wait they are looking at and in what order they are. So if they are anxious you can simply tell them when they are going to be able to get it and if you have the time to complete it before the rush and when they will be the next one to have an order completed.

I usually inform everyone on my Facebook page to please order early as time slots fill up quickly well before the season starts.

Remember too that if you have another job to include also a space for yourself as it will get to the point that if you don’t you will burn out and then you wont be able to do the work you promised which reflects badly.

Always remember that a lot of business is generated through word of mouth so make sure your character is intact to get the most out of this holiday season. I have already started to work on my Christmas orders and am thankful for my customers for being considerate and realize that it does take time to complete the paintings.

As entrepreneurs you must always look for ways in which to sell your talents. I suggest you share with friends and family to start and eventually those friends of friends will share and word will start to spread so that you become known for it and people will seek you out. This is a work in progress type of deal, no quick way to get more customers. It is all in how often you can produce the paintings for others to see and how well you do it.

Remember that there are so many styles of paintings so don’t ever be discouraged, someone will love your style! There is plenty of work for everyone.

Don’t ever give up. I started out with one or two paintings here and there and now I have to make a schedule because I have people asking that I don’t know. Which is nice, once you are known around as an artist you will find lots of interesting projects will find their way to you!

Time is not the enemy, make a schedule and stick to it. Things will go so much smoother if you do. Cheers!

Namaste.

Sale?! Yes, thats it! How to get some attention on Etsy

I have been an Etsy seller for a few years, I got the odd sale here or there but nothing steady. It has been frustrating, to say the least.  I wondered what was the magic key to get more attention. I added more and still nothing. I changed my photos several times still nothing. I started to add money to bring customers my way from google marketing through Etsy. Got a couple sales but again nothing much.

Over and over I have been trying to get the attention of others by blasting my twitter and facebook. Wondering what the heck was going on!

Then I decided to have a sale, I put a percentage off and waited. BOOM a sale, then another!!!  NICE!

SO I thought that was awesome now people will start to come back often to my shop so I left it for a while and then again…. nothing.

WHY! So I was a bit slow on process mostly because I had other projects so it wasn’t really a priority.

Then when I was finished and wasn’t busy again I decided to have a different sale. And again BOOM! another sale!! then another!

I figured it out… I finally figured what was making people come to my store. If I had a sale it was more appealing to the buyer! Even when I had dropped my prices before the sale it did not matter. It was the coupon sale that was the ticket. It was marketing for me. It cost me nothing really for the overall idea had developed that when you have a sale you drive business to your store!!

So now I got it. The key to getting some sales was not lowering my prices or offering something for nothing.

No it was a 10- 15 % sale at times or even 30 % it didn’t matter as long as I was having something going it was achieving what I had so desperately wanted!  I haven’t made my millions yet and its just starting but I am happy to say if you are new to Etsy have a sale!!!

What do you have to lose, Because the end result is you want the sale and this is how you get people looking! And I know it sounds too ridiculous and simple and it is! try it, the traffic you will see will show you the difference as well thanks for Etsy for having the analytics to keep track of it all for you!

Good luck! and I hope you have great success.

New series of paintings

I have had some time to get some of the things I been thinking about doing and actually getting done.

I am going to be continuing to pursue different avenues of creativity and it is over flowing lately.

I envisioned this lady for some reason or another and her sisters. Season paintings are going to be of Queens of the season.

This one shown is the Queen of Autumn, for obvious reasons. But I really wanted to incorporate some Canadian element to make it striking and unique. autmumnqueenwatermark.png

I am currently working on my next one, Winter. I really like the black background so I will probably have all of them in unison with the same flow and similar styles.

I hope at the end of it have all four going across or even a window type setting and will be sold as a unit together along with prints for sale of each if people just want the one.

I also off topic have been experimenting with Dirty pour paintings or another word I have heard is pour paintings.

I have Seen various styles and cell type paintings and I love the color combinations and interesting patterns it makes. I will be showing some of those once I get them dried.

SO I have a lot of different things going on which I love! Not to mention my continued efforts to make unique fashion tees. So we will see what I can get accomplished before the Crazy Christmas rush.

Look out for some really cool posts up and coming!

Making Tee’s!

So I decided to take some of my ideas and make some Tees. Why? well, why the heck not? All joking aside, I figured it would be appropriate to let a little laughter brighten the day and if it does for someone, I have already won.

I am all about originality so this made perfect sense to not only advertise my artwork but get a few shirts for myself.

No better advertising than being a billboard for your own stuff! *tip*

These t-shirts can be found on a pretty cool site called SunFrog, here’s the link: https://www.sunfrog.com

What’s so cool about this site is not only can you design your own shirts but you can sell them too!  They have a few different styles and hoodies!  What I like even more is this site is easy to use and your image can be a minimum of 3200×2400 px.

That isn’t bad considering Society6 is way more demanding of its dealers in that they want high-quality images and if you don’t own photoshop or some way of making them bigger without distortion you won’t be able to use the site to create pieces for selling.

I figure that you could even purchase these shirts and put them on your Etsy even.  Makes for some interest and variety on the online store.

If you haven’t checked it out yet here’s the link to one of my tees! https://manager.sunfrogshirts.com/promote/?groupid=137397204

Exhausted? How to stretch those hours into quality not quantity.

I often find myself taking on too many tasks and too many projects as they always seem to come in clusters. I feel as though I may not know when the next job comes as an illustrator so when a multitude of work comes my way I just can’t say no.

Typically I work late evening night hours as much as my body will physically allow, only to burn out and eventually become ill. So when is really a good time to stop working and be more productive at your job at home or in the office?

Well, I have started to use certain increments of time during the day or evening that it is set in stone that I set aside for my family and activities because really isn’t that who you are working for anyway? These time slots are not allowed to be broken they are a must a block of time to set aside that will not be broken.

If you don’t take those breaks for yourself, I find the creativity stops flowing and you become so exhausted that the quality of your work suffers as a result. Not to mention family members and friends wondering where you went to. So even if it is 20 mins to read that article that has been sitting on the table for weeks or just stopping to enjoy that cup of coffee or listen to your friends and families day can take huge advantages to your overall moral and health.

So even if it is 20 mins to read that article that has been sitting on the table for weeks or just stopping to enjoy that cup of coffee or listen/text to your friends and families day can take huge advantages to your overall moral and health.

Work is work and family is family and they cannot be replaced so remember that the next time you decide to work late to get in extra hours to buy that bigger home no one will ever see you in.  Remember what is really important, you, your health and your family.

Something Different

night2

As an artist, I get bored easily with doing the same thing. I am always trying to do things that will challenge me to become a better artist. I wanted to do something that I felt would make me have to adapt to a challenge like this painting and make it my own.

Although it is not finished you can see that I have gotten the base down for my project and will show the final completed image once it’s done.

I find that going beyond what you are good at makes you learn different things that work and the things that don’t. I see things as I want to accomplish not as something I can’t do. Because really how do you know if you have never tried?

In a few day’s I will post the finished result which will be available for sale. This once it is done will not be an ordinary painting because I will be adding my funky touches to it to really enhance it and make it my own.  I hope it will turn out like I am envisioning but again everything is trial and error. And that is ok too if it doesn’t turn out how I imagined, then I learned something.

Tip: if you never go outside your comfort box you will never discover something new.
